The Life and Family of Thomas Kennedy (1837-1921)
Thomas Michael Richard Kennedy was the first of a line of ‘Australian Kennedys’.
This book tells Thomas’s personal story and presents both his ancestral and descendant studies to provide a clear narrative of his Irish roots (and beyond). It completes a picture of this Kennedy family tree from about 1700 through to the generation of Thomas’s grand children – a century of his descendants in Australia. Thomas played a significant role in the heritage of the Linton-Skipton-Ballarat districts and his story is of relevance to the history of those towns.
“Thomas Kennedy was born in 1837, Dublin, Ireland, and came to Melbourne, Australia in 1859. He was in every sense a pioneer, and after reading his story, one cannot fail to be impressed by this man. His drive, achievement, social contribution, egalitarianism, and integrity was colossal. He was loved and admired by his family and community. He was kind, generous, empathetic and intelligent – all of which he maintained through a life of challenge, hardship, and personal grief. He was quite extraordinary.“
